Robot Magnetic End Effector for Ferrous Material Handling

In the manufacturing automation production lines, an end effector of industrial robots is widely seen. There are many types of end effectors for robots. The most commonly used are pneumatic grippers which are simpler and cheaper than electric ones. Today we talk about the robot magnetic end effector which belongs to the electric gripper.

The magnetic end effector is mainly for ferrous material handling in structural fabrication, construction machinery, and other metalworking factories. Compared with the well-known vacuum suction cup grippers, magnetic grippers have stronger construction that needs minimum maintenance (the former needs regular changes of rubber cups). What’s more, the correctness of magnetic grippers’ grasping is higher than that of suction cups. Needless to say, magnetic grippers can handle metal parts with holes, while vacuum cups cannot. The biggest limitation of the magnetic end effector is probably that they are only applicable to ferromagnetic parts.

Electromagnetic or electro-permanent magnetic end effectors?

And there exist both electromagnetic grippers and electro-permanent magnetic grippers. HVR MAG focuses on the latter ones. Comparing the two, the biggest difference is that the latter ones do not consume so much electric power, and will keep clamping the workpiece even when the power is cut off.
